Greater Than Business Podcast – Episode 013

 

This is episode 13 of the Greater Than Business Podcast. And today we are going to be talking about business building fears and how to overcome them. So basically we're going to be talking about mindset and how every little thing that you possibly think could go wrong in your business, most likely will. And your mind is going to go there 100% of the time to the worst case scenario. And everybody goes through these stages and what we're going to be talking about is basically how to fight the little voice in your head that is making you terrified of taking those leaps. So this is a very normal topic that entrepreneurs go through because everybody has business fears. Everyone has fears basically in life and business is no different. You are going to encounter very scary things as you build and grow your business. You are going to deal with various things such as imposter syndrome, and why don't people like me and rejection and basically you name it and it's going to happen to you over the roller coaster ride. That is entrepreneurship. So I wanna take a moment and just basically fill you in and let you know that this is normal. You are not some magical Unicorn that this is only happening to every single person out there that is running a business deals with these fears. So what you need to work on is learning to shut off that little voice inside your head that is telling you all of the doom and gloom that could possibly happen by you taking action and doing what you want to do. And basically tell that voice to go away. Stop talking and don't listen to it.

I want you to do a little bit of an exercise right now and I want you to get out a piece of paper and pause this episode and write down the five biggest fears in your business that are holding you back. Once you're done, let me know. Well, obviously don't let me know because you're listening, but unpause me and I want to come back and talk about possibly, or what might be on that list. So take a minute, think about it. I'm going to share with you my five biggest fears and how I overcame them as well. So sit down, pull out that piece of paper and write down the five biggest fears that you were dealing with. Pause me now or in a second and then come back once you finish that list.

Okay, welcome back. I am so glad that you took a second and thought about your five biggest fears that are holding you back. And now I'm going to live up to my end of the bargain and share with you my five and I'm hoping that there will be some overlap here because they're fairly common fears that I've experienced in growing my business. And I feel that even if there's not overlap, maybe you'll be able to reframe your fears and see how you can come out of the other side by listening to how I was able to. So number, and just to preface this, these are not in any order. They're just all fears. So I don't have one fear over another. I have just experienced all of these well building my business and by not by allowing these fears to control my business growth, it has actually held me back.

And I don't want you to go through the same thing. So I really want you to think about your mindset. Think about how you are dealing with these issues in your business and these fears that you're having and see if there's a way where you can overcome them and start flipping the switch and flipping the script that's in your head on these issues. So without further ado, I'm going to stop procrastinating and I'm going to share with you my five biggest business fears. So first off, my number one is I am not an expert and let me know, email me, flow@flowautomationinc.com. If you have ever had this fear, you are not an expert. I am not an expert. Guess what you are. You may not be the top guru expert, you may not have created whatever it is that you are an expert in.

You may not be the founding thought leader on this topic, whatever it may be. But you are an expert and the reason why you are an expert is because you bring to the table a voice that carries all of your experiences related to that topic. Whatever your business topic may be, you bring a unique angle to that topic and that is why you are an expert because somebody somewhere is going to be listening to you reading what you're, what are writing following you in some form and you are their expert. You are their guru, you are their person that is helping them to do whatever it is that you're teaching in your business or whatever service you do in your business. You are an expert because you know things that only you can know and you know things that only you can teach. And you may not be the biggest guru out there, but you don't have to be.

You just need to be there for a person who needs you at that moment in their life. So you may think that you are not an expert, but you are. Trust me on that one. I have seen this countless times over the last couple of years where people feel that they are not an expert. And then they actually put themselves out there and realize, oh, wait a second, I do actually know things. And once you get that validation of, okay, hold on, I've got this, I know what I'm doing and I'm a lot further along than I thought I was, and that's when you'll get it. And that's when you'll realize that you are an expert. So throw that thought out the window, crumble it up in a ball, burn it. I don't care what you do, but you are an expert in your own way and you are an expert to somebody out there.

So you just need to put that fear aside. Don't worry about it and do what you do for your people. So that's it. That's all you have to do. Um, if you have any sort of mindset books that help to kind of reframe your mind and start thinking of other, um, ways to think about things and kind of spin your mind and your thought process, I would recommend reading something or listening to a podcast or do basically whatever you want. But you need to try to reframe your mindset so that when one of these evil fears slips in your mind, you can automatically go, okay, I get it. I accept that this is a fear. It is rational to have fears, but I'm not gonna let this control me. And then you need to flip it. Say what it is that you need to say.

That's kind of the opposite of how you're feeling. And then do an action that proves that you are living that new mindset. So if you feel you are not an expert, start telling yourself, I am an expert. I know things, I know things that only I know I can teach this in a way that only I can teach. I am an expert. And then once you put yourself out there, you'll have people coming to you. And saying, oh my gosh, you're such an expert and there you go. All of a sudden you've become the expert. So keep that in mind and I'm going to let you know now what my second biggest fear is in business, and it is that people won't care what I have to say. So that kind of falls on this same line of being an expert because you always kind of assume, well, who am I to get up on a soapbox and start talking?

Who am I? Why would people listen to me? What do I bring to the table? People are not gonna care. What little me has to say, and you're wrong. They will care because your tribe is your tribe for a reason. You have positioned yourself or you're going to position, position yourself in a way that will make people care what you have to say, and they will hang on your every word and they will love you for who you are, what you're doing, how you're helping them, and how you're running your business. So you don't need to worry about people not caring because the people that don't care aren't your right people. They are not your people. The people that do care what you have to say, love on those people. They are your tribe and that is who you need to be doing this for.

So you are running your business for your select tribe of people that get you and it may take a while to find those people, but they are out there and have you just keep saying your message over and over and over again, whatever it is, wherever you want, but basically just keep saying it. You will find your tribe. People are going to resonate with what you're saying and people will care. They will wholeheartedly care and that is what's going to make your business better. Okay? Number three, people will judge me. This is a big one. Every single person in business is always afraid of judgment and it comes from both ways. People judging you that you're not successful enough, people judging you, that you're too successful. People questioning every single little thing that you do. It's going to happen. And it sucks, but it doesn't matter.

In the grand scheme of everything that you're doing with your business, people are going to judge you no matter what you do. The only thing that you can control is not letting it affect you. You can't allow people that mean nothing to you in your business. You can't allow them to dictate your success. I have seen people get judged for being too successful too fast. I have seen people judge other people for being in business for way too long and not being successful enough. Every single person has their own definition of success and just because my definition of success doesn't fit your definition of success, that doesn't mean that I'm not successful. That doesn't mean that you're not successful. It just means that we are in two different places and I can't judge you and you shouldn't judge me. And once you realize that if someone is judging you that it doesn't matter and that as long as you are doing something that is making you happy and running your business in the most ethical way that you can, then that is what matters.

So people can judge you all you want or all they want and that's going to happen. All you can control is by not letting it bother you. Don't be afraid. Get out there. Do what you want to do. Build Your Business in the way that you want and make sure that you obviously listened to some of the judgement. Take it in and then say thank you and release it. Let it go. There's no reason for you to bottle that up to even think about it. Again, it does not matter because people, as I said, people will judge you it, no matter what you do, I have actually seen people judge people for doing something and then the person will turn around and do the exact opposite and that same person will continue to still judge them for the exact same thing that they just reverse judge them for. So there's no winning with judgement. Everybody has an opinion, everybody is going to think that you are wrong and they are right and you just have to let it go. And that's it. It's, it's sounds so easy to say, but honestly once you start practicing, just letting it go, you will feel 100% better about your business and it also will allow you to take action in your own business and push yourself forward so that you do have that business that you want.

Okay. The next fear that I have written down here is I don't have a following. So this is something that I've struggled with for a while where I've been building businesses for huge industry names. I have been building them for small industries as well, all over the board. And I have seen people shut down their own business because they fear that they don't have a following. And it's funny, I actually have done this where I have been so afraid of not having a following. Like, oh, I shouldn't put out a blog post this week because no one's even going to read it anyways. And then you don't put out a blog post. And it's funny because then you get an email saying, hey, I really look forward to reading your blog posts. And it might only be one person, but you have a following. It is that one person, so now you have taken that potential of that one person possibly telling their friends, telling their associates, spreading the love, spreading the word, and you could have been creating a bigger following if you had have just acknowledged that that one person was your starting point.

You have to start somewhere with your following and it sucks. Trust me, I get it. It sucks. Putting out content over and over and over again and creating courses and building your services and building your business and doing all of that stuff. When you literally hear crickets every time you put something out there, but the thing is is you just have to keep the momentum pushing forward because eventually you will do something that's going to catch fire and when it does, you will have that following that you've been looking for. So keep up the persistency, keep pushing. Even if you feel like you don't have a following, just remember that you do. That is a big reason why I think a lot of people stress on making sure that you nail down your ideal client and why you should focus on having one ideal client and everything that you put out there should be directed at that one ideal client.

Because eventually that one ideal client is going to come out of the woodwork and when you find them, you will have found your tribe because the rest of them won't be that far behind. So keep pushing, keep moving forward. And don't worry if you feel like you don't have a following because they're there, they're out there, they will find you. But you need to keep putting yourself out there and giving yourself the opportunity for them to find you. Okay? My last biggest business fear is that I am wasting money and I'm never going to get it back. That is a big one. Money is a huge mindset issue and it is something that takes a lot of practice to be able to build your money mindset and for you to really get in control of it. So if you have not read anything by Denise Duffield Thomas, I highly recommend her. She has phenomenal books out there that will help you with your money mindset. I will link to them in the show notes, but she's phenomenal with helping with money mindset and she will be able to flip that switch in your head that will make you more conscious of how you speak and how you treat money. You are never ever wasting money when you are investing it in your business.

As long as obviously you are doing it responsibly and knowing the risks associated with the investment that you're making, then you will never be wasting it. If you do, however, make a bad investment with your money, that's okay because there's going to be a way to get that back later on down the road. You just need to remember that when you put money out there, money's going to come back and the more that you understand that that money is the greatest tool that you can use to build your business and that investing, that money is always a smart move. If you need help with something, if you need to hire somebody, do it. Don't view it as, oh my gosh, they're so expensive. Just do it. It will benefit you in the long run because it's going to free up your time, free up your head space, free up, your thinking, your creativity, everything.

If you don't have to worry about whatever that is that you wanted to outsource, and that right there is what you're actually paying for is that freedom, that ability to actually do the things that you love and outsource. The other things, and the way that you can do that is by investing your money. You're not wasting it. You're not spending it. If you make a bad investment, there's ways to not get around it, but there's ways to build back up your money. It is a renewable resource, but you can't ever view it as wasting money. So every time you think of spending money, think of it as an investment. Think about how much joy that investment is going to bring back to you. And it may not be a financial gain. It may be a time gain. It may be sanity that you're gaining. It may be, I don't know, an amazing computer that you're buying and investing your money in.

I don't know what you want to spend your money on, but whatever you're doing, it is going to push you forward. It's going to help your business, it's going to be a good investment. And if you think that you're wasting it, then I can guarantee that you are going to be wasting it because you're never going to actually take that investment seriously. And that is the biggest shift that you need to make. So those are my top five. Let me know, honestly, email me. It's scary enough as it is. But by allowing your mind to just travel and build things up and snowball and become a bigger disaster than you could ever have possibly imagined.

That's not helping anybody. So you need to make sure that you get your business fears in, check whatever they are and then say, [inaudible], you're not going to stop me from building my dream business and then go ahead and prove that inner voice wrong inside of you.
