Here’s a run-down of The Greater Than Business Podcast and what you can expect from us with each episode and why you should listen and subscribe.
My name is Courtney Bedore and I have been running in online business since 2014 where I generally service other people’s online businesses. So needless to say, I have been in the trenches dealing with anything and everything that has been thrown my way in the past five years almost and it has been quite an adventure. In this introductory episode, what I want to do is give you a little bit of an insight into my story, how I got to where I am and why you should listen to this podcast. I know that there are thousands of podcasts out there, if not hundreds of thousands that are related to building your business. But what I want to do is just let you know why this podcast is a little bit different.
So first off, our biggest priority is YOU, not your business, not your bottom line, not your profits. It is you. What I mean by that is that you need to be the most important asset in your business. What I’ve seen over the past four and a half years is that a lot of people don’t take time for themselves when they’re building their business. This isn’t all about self-care, it’s just about kind of remembering your why, remembering that your life needs to be greater than your business and that there’s always more than just making money. I have met several people that make a lot of money on a daily basis and they are working more than if they were working at a regular nine-to-five job. I’m not saying that that’s a bad thing, but the things that they’re working on are not high priority items that they should be working on and they are slowly killing themselves and have no time to actually enjoy the income they are making.
They are doing the mundane tasks in their business that just don’t matter and they’re not pushing themselves forward. They’re basically just kind of working to get the hustle badge, which is what I definitely want to talk about. So there’s going to be several episodes coming up that will basically kind of walk you through why and how you can avoid that and basically kind of a way of fixing it, and nipping it before it starts to become a problem.
As I said before, I’m going to give you a quick rundown of who I am. I have been running an online business since 2014, I started off with wanting to teach people how to organize their lives online. So think Marie Kondo, but not … Basically kind of teaching you how to do it yourself and it ended up that it wasn’t the right fit for me. I was really good at organizing and I found so much joy in organizing, but it was really hard to translate that into a business plan and a business model.
What I realized was that I was super good at organizing and I had a very efficient and well-running business even though the model wasn’t correct and my target market was off, I was still running a very organized business. So then I thought, “Hmm, maybe what I can do is become an online business manager so I could take my skillset of organizing and wanting to do more for other people and then basically create a business position in companies that would help me.” So I became an online business manager and I decided that I was going to help people to get their businesses in order and get them a little bit more organized, get some plans in place, figure out promotional schedules, launch schedules, social media timings, you name it. I was basically kind of doing everything.
But the problem was is that I still wasn’t happy. So even though I had a business now that was making good money, I still wasn’t doing things that were bringing me the amount of joy that I wanted. I was working all hours. I was waking up in the middle of the night freaking out that I forgot to do something. I had so much on my plate that it just kind of spiraled out of control. I don’t know how to gloss it over and make it fun. It got of control very quickly. What ended up being the root of the problem was I am a huge, huge people pleaser and I was basically saying yes to things I had no business saying yes to. I was doing things that were out of my job description. I was basically trying to juggle it all and basically be that void that my clients had in their business and I was basically becoming the catchall.
So if they needed a VA task done, I was doing it. The problem is that that then takes me away from the organizing and the structure that I was supposed to be bringing to these businesses because I didn’t have time. I was taking on all these extra tasks just to avoid creating another role within their company and I just figured it was easier for me to manage on my own. After doing this for a lot longer than I should have, I decided I wasn’t working with clients that were ready to be as organized as I wanted them to be. I had to figure out was who my ideal client was and try to work with them.
So basically the people that I was working with weren’t willing to hand over the reins and the control, which then became a problem because I can’t do my job if I don’t have control. So needless to say, taking on that role was just not ideal for me. What I ended up doing was shifting just a tad into managing Infusionsoft accounts. Part of becoming an online business manager, I realized that I was really, really good at building in Infusionsoft and strategizing with it. For some reason, the software that everyone thinks is so confusing came naturally to me. I created a job for myself where I could work behind the scenes building out launches, campaigns, sequences, strategy all inside Infusionsoft and then obviously partnering with the business owners to have their copywriters on board, their Facebook strategists, their graphic designers. I was still kind of not managing the whole project, but I was doing a lot with inside Infusionsoft.
Currently, I have made another shift in my business is I have completely or almost completely dropped all clients and I am now just working with two businesses. I am their Infusionsoft strategic partner and basically what I’m doing is helping them the same way that I was doing before but in greater depth. So I’ve limited my client load so that I can help more people, which sounds funny, but I’ve limited it so that I can reach out and really help more people automate their business, get more time back in their business, focus on what matters, outsource what doesn’t, and learn how to run a business that doesn’t run your life.
The whole inspiration for this podcast and essentially my business, Flow Automation. I was once on a phone call with a mastermind group and one of the people on the call, she said, “Who do you want to disappoint?” It was basically an ultimatum between do I want to disappoint my clients or do I want to disappoint my family? For me, it’s a terrifying thought to disappoint my clients because then that means they will fire me and I will be disappointed in myself. I will no longer have an income. I basically had to get over that fear. But the person that was easier or the people that were easier for me to disappoint was my family because they’re more forgiving and they can’t fire me because they’re my family for life. But I started noticing it with my children especially, noticing that they were making just kind of these comments every once in a while that like, “Mommy’s always working. Mommy’s always in her office. Mommy never can go to events. She can’t even eat dinner with us because she has to work or hop on a call or do whatever at any hour of the night.”
I was waking up at 4:00 AM. I was working until 11:00 PM and I was burning out and then any time when I was literally at the point of burning out and stopped working, it wasn’t so that I could spend more time with my family. At that point, I was just sleeping and catching up on rest. Basically, because my body was shutting down and saying, “No, you must rest.” Even at that, my family still wasn’t getting my ideal attention. So what ended up happening after that was I released all of my clients. I was doing full-time work for eight different clients and even though I could handle it, I couldn’t at the same time. It wasn’t the client load, it was the fact that I kept taking on additional roles in their businesses above and beyond what I was being paid to do.
So for one example, I don’t do website coding. That’s not part of what I do. I’m not a web programmer. I’m not a site designer and I don’t know how to code and I was getting jobs within the business that were requiring me to code, which I didn’t know how to do. So I had to find out how to do it and I don’t know what possessed me to say yes, but I’m sure a lot of you have probably been in that position of if you don’t say yes, then they’ll find somebody else to do it and what happens if they know how to do what I do too. Then I’m out of the job and what do I do? So it was very fear based, very scarcity mindset and it was a really bad spot to build a business from.
I basically decided to get rid of everybody and focus on myself and that is how Flow Automation was born. I slowly started trickling down the number of clients that I was working with and peacefully parted ways with them all and basically said I can’t do this any longer and then started building up my own thing, which is Flow Automation and essentially also this podcast. The Greater Than Business Podcast came from an idea of trying to explore topics that will drive your business forward. They will help you to grow your business, scale your business, however, it’s not going to require you to miss a good night’s sleep, miss an event with your child, miss time with your partner, your spouse, whoever, miss time with your friends.
It will allow you to build a thriving business and actually have the income that you want to be able to do those tasks that you want to do. When I say tasks, I mean hobbies and fun stuff. It also provides you with the time to be able to do it. Here’s an example of exactly what I am talking about. When my husband and I first started dating and eventually get married, we didn’t have the money to travel for our honeymoon. We thought if he got a great job and I built my business, we would have so much income coming in that we would finally be able to go on our long overdue honeymoon. However, what ended up happening was neither one of us has yet to be able to go on that honeymoon. Our 10-year anniversary is coming up in August and we still haven’t been able to go.
The reason why we haven’t gone on our honeymoon is that we finally got to the place where we’re making fantastic money, we both have a steady income, everything is going well, we still didn’t have the time to be able to do it. Add in a couple of other circumstances such as we have children and they have events in sports and our families live far away and all of that stuff. So logistically we’re not quite there yet, but that’s just another excuse on why we haven’t taken this time for ourselves. What the biggest excuse is, is that we have never had the time. I’ve always been working. We have constantly said that “Someday we’ll get there. Someday we’ll be able to do this. We’re definitely going to do it here shortly.” But it’s awkward because you want to take that time. You want to promote self-care, but yet if you take any time off, you’re off from your business. It’s going to fail without you and I don’t want you to fall into the same dirty habit that I did.
That’s basically what it is. It’s a dirty, dirty habit of constantly putting your business over everything else. Yes, your business makes money for you. Yes, your business is important. But there comes a time when I had to say, “Enough is enough. I need to put myself first. I need to put my family first. I need to build a business more structured like a nine-to-five.” as funny as that sounds. You spend all of your time trying to escape your nine-to-five and then you end up building a business that’s a 12 to 12 and then all you want and long for is a business that just operates from nine-to-five. That is what I’m going to help you guys reach, a point where your business is getting you the income that you thought your own business would drive towards you.
But yet you don’t have to work 12 to 12. You don’t have to put in 16-hour days. You don’t have to be up all night trying to prep for your launch and get more people into your funnels and all of that scary stuff. You don’t need to be doing that. I’m going to show you what’s working now. I’m going to show you what has worked, what I think will work in the future. We’re going to examine a whole lot of topics and we’re also going to get in some real talk as well. So I’m going to get very candid with some of my story. I’m going to explain to you where and when I hit rock bottom. I’m going to explain to you how I rose above it and how I finally took the action that I needed to do to make my life greater than my business.
That is how I got the title of this show is because I wanted everyone to realize that your life has to be your biggest priority over growing your business. But yet that doesn’t mean that you can’t grow a really successful business while focusing on your life, your health, your self-care, your mental health, your physical health, all of that stuff all comes into play. As soon as it’s out of alignment then everything suffers. This podcast is going to help you to see when things get out of alignment and then shift them back into alignment. I’m sure a lot of you are still reading along right now can definitely relate to a lot of things that I’ve said and you’re probably feeling very overwhelmed by it all. But please do not be overwhelmed. I promise you that you’re in the right place and we will get through this together and I am going to teach you some hard and quick wins in these first couple episodes to get you moving in the right direction.
